The Spyglass Inn Nominated at Isle of Wight Awards 2026
We’re really pleased to share that The Spyglass Inn has been nominated for Best Pub and Best Fish & Chips at the 2026 Red Funnel Isle of Wight Awards. We sit at the western end of Ventnor Esplanade, right on the water, with views across the Channel that are hard to beat. The building dates from around 1830 and the walls are full of maritime history and character. Crab and lobster come directly from the Ventnor Haven Fishery next door, and the specials board changes with whatever’s good that day. There’s live music most evenings, a sun-catching terrace, and a genuine welcome for anyone who just wants to sit by the sea. If a trip to the Spyglass has ever put a smile on your face, your vote would mean the world to us.

Spanish Salute at The Spyglass Inn
Crew from The Spyglass Inn, Ventnor, will be turning out to salute a very special visitor on Wednesday, 21st May. The ship Santa Maria will be visiting Ventnor Bay at the request of King Felipe of Spain, after an invitation was extended by local historian David Baldwin. Nao Santa María is a stunning replica of one of the most famous ships in maritime history, the ship sailed by Christopher Columbus during his 1492 voyage to the Americas. It plans to make a salute by cannonfire to The Spyglass at around 2.15 pm, whereupon the salute will be returned from the outside deck of the pub. It will be a sight not to be missed. Neil Gibbs, owner of The Spyglass, commented: “This visit of the Santa Maria will highlight and celebrate the sea victories won off the Isle of Wight coast during 1588. Islanders like Gilbert Lee and George Jenner are now totally unknown, but they were national heroes at the time. We’re proud to be celebrating their decisive actions over 400 years later, and everyone is welcome to come and join us.” Santa María will commemorate the arrival of the famous Spanish Armada to the Isle of Wight in

First-ever Ventnor Pirate Festival is a swashbuckling success!
Ventnor recently made waves with its first-ever Pirate Festival. The four-day extravaganza, which took place between 14-17 August 2024, saw visitors and locals alike come together to celebrate all things piratical, culminating in an event that has already cemented its place in the town’s cultural calendar. The festival kicked off with a grand pirate parade that saw pirates of all ages, from young landlubbers to seasoned seadogs, march through the town along with the Ventnor Carnival procession. Local businesses enthusiastically joined in on the festivities, decorating shop fronts with skulls, crossbones, and an array of pirate-themed decor that added to the festival’s strong community spirit. Entertainment was in no short supply over the four days, with a programme packed to cater for buccaneers of all ages. Children (and the young at heart) could get stuck in an array of activities around Ventnor paddling pool and on the beach, including treasure hunts, workshops, games and the chance to interact with their favourite pirates. For adults, The Spyglass Inn became a buzzing tavern for thirsty scallywags, with tons of live music and sea shanties to sing along to whilst basking in the glorious summer sun. “We’re thrilled with the success of Ventnor’s
