Beer Mats _ Spyglass

New beermats celebrate the Isle of Wight’s iconic brewing heritage

New beermats celebrate the Isle of Wight’s iconic brewing heritage 1200 800 The Spyglass Inn

We are proud to announce that alongside our sister pubs we have introduced four brand new beermat designs that are a nostalgic nod to the old Burt’s Brewery, which brewed its last pint of beer over 25 years ago. Burt’s is still well remembered by many on the Isle of Wight and its distinctive beermats were once a common sight in pubs across the Island.

The new designs feature The Spyglass Inn, The Bargeman’s Rest, The Steamer Inn and The Dairyman’s Daughter. Neil Gibbs, commented “When we first opened the doors to The Spyglass Inn back in 1988, we were proud to support other local businesses and served up Burt’s Brewery beers to many happy customers. I am pleased that the new beermat design draws upon this heritage to create something instantly recognisable”.

Many fans of local Isle of Wight ales might recognise the distinctive look of the new beer mats which feature the shape of the Isle of Wight and uses a retro colour scheme combined with each of the pubs iconic branding. “We are very proud of the Island and its history and wanted a design that would connect with this heritage. Some of the initial designs used more contemporary colours, but we all agreed that the original just looked right, so we’ve stuck with it,” said Andrew Gibbs. “We make sure all of our pubs have a warm welcome and there’s lots of Island memorabilia on display. Our new beermats now add to this perfectly.”

Beer Mats

Solent, a local marketing agency was commissioned to create a design that could capture this connection between the pubs and Burt’s Brewery. Marie Woodward, Client Account Manager said: “It’s a real challenge to bring together these different styles, but it’s been one that our team has really enjoyed. Anyone who remembers Burt’s should be pleased with the result and we’ve had some great feedback.”

Burt’s Brewery was an Island institution and one of 14 breweries that were in existence at the start of the 20th century.

All four beermat designs can be seen in The Spyglass Inn, The Bargeman’s Rest, The Steamer Inn and The Dairyman’s Daughter from now. The reverse of the beermats encourages customers to share photos of their visit to win a prize for a meal for two.

St Patrick’s Day starts a little early at The Spyglass this year with great live music from Scarecrow who will be playing on the evening of Saturday 16th March. Perfect to get you in the spirit before the, now famous, Spy St Pat’s breakfast.
Join us on the actual day, Sunday 17th March, for our annual St Patrick’s Day shenanigans.

Booking for the breakfast is essential, but everyone is welcome from normal opening hours with the bar and kitchen open for business as usual.
We’ve got the amazing JC playing live from 11.30am with his band Folklore and dressing up (as always at The Spy) is positively encouraged, there’s even prizes for the best dressed.

Owner Neil Gibbs commented;
“Irish folk love music and know how to party like we do here at the Spyglass. We thought people would love the chance to celebrate with one of our legendary breakfasts too. It’s something a bit different and is very popular”

St Patrick’s Day is celebrated the world over, with people from all nations getting involved regardless of their heritage. What started as a commemorative day for the patron saint of Ireland has fast become a festivity celebrating the Irish culture. Beaujolais Day

Beaujolais Day 864 576 The Spyglass Inn

Thursday 15th November
Possibly the world’s largest wine bash, Beaujolais Nouveau takes place on the third Thursday of November, this year falling on the 15th November. This is the date the Beaujolais Nouveau hits the shelves worldwide – retailers are not allowed to sell this year’s vintage before this date. Beaujolais is a wine region in Burgundy, France. For centuries, the wine was purely a local affair, not drank or respected elsewhere. Things changed in 1951 thanks to some very clever marketing that saw the vineyards cutting back on restrictions of when the newest vintages of Beaujolais wine could be released, to the middle of November. This wine was Beaujolais Nouveau (“New Beaujolais”). A new annual race was conjured up, to see who could get their Beaujolais Nouveau to the Paris markets first, and thus, the frenzy each year for the Beaujolais Nouveau was born. At precisely midnight, on the third Thursday of November every year, over a million cases of Beaujolais Nouveau begin a journey through France to Paris for shipment across the globe. It is now celebrated the world over with millions popping a cork in late November.
The Spyglass Inn have been celebrating this fine tradition virtually since the pub opened in 1988, making this year its 30th year!
The famous Beaujolais Breakfast combines a fine bottle of Beaujolais with a full English breakfast. This annual event has become a firm fixture in The Spyglass’ event calendar.
The atmosphere is decidedly Francais on the day, with the rare sight of the Tricolours flying high outside (and inside) the pub, French accordion music and even the option to indulge in a little bit French dressing-up if you fancy! If full on fancy dress is not your thing then just pop on a beret and your a striped shirt and you’re good to go!
Booking is absolutely essential and tickets can be purchased by calling 01983 855338.
